1954 April 20 Meeting (clipping) [handwritten date] Mar. 16-1954 W. C. T. U. Husbands Feted in Cosand Home Tuesday The Rev. and Rms. Rendel Cosand were hosts to about 35 members of the WCTU and their husbands, at the annual Honrary members meeting Tuesday evening. The Rev. Mr. Cosand led devotions and president, Mrs. A. W. McBlain gave a brief review of the origin and growth of the WCTU. Having been organized 20 years ago in both nation and state, the motto this year is "30 more in 54." The little sons of the Cosands delighted the group with their singing. The Rev. James Brownlee gave the main address, using many interesting personal experiences in this country, Panama and Brazil during his many years as a missionary. Social hour and light refreshments followed the program. Three new members were added to the roll. W.C.T.U. meet [sic] at The home of Mrs Eva M. Pepoon with 12 present Mrs Cosand gave teh Devotionals from Revelations 3rd chapter 10 verse Over Dome Temperance Mrs Cosand gave a reading On Our Church Versus The World Mrs McBlain led In Prayer All members gave the Pledges to the American, Christian & Temperance Flags. Mrs McBlain had charge of the program. She gave an interesting article On The [cons...m] of Our Youth Also reviewing article from The W.C.T.U. Champion Mrs Ewing On Alcohol and Inheritance and Mrs Garrington On the use of tobaco [sic] A Motion By Mrs Cosand 2nd BY Mrs Skiles we place temperance booklets into the Hi School where students are taking Driving lessons. Secretary report read and approved as read. Our President urged each member to write Our State Secretary of The Des Moines Fair Board protesting the sale of Liquor on The Fair grounds. Mrs Harold Hansen And Mrs Martha Foster became new members of The W.C.T.U. By paying $1.00 Dues. Pamplets [sic] were given to several members. Why You should join The W.C.T.U. Collection 1.09 meeting adjourned with The usual benediction Eva M. Pepoon Sec May 18 WCTU meet [sic] at the Home of Rachel Mikel with 13 members present and one Gust [sic] Mrs Skiles had charge of Devotionals The Theme of Mother and Motherhood Mrs Sage reviewed articles from The Union Signal. Mrs Ata Russell a reading from The Champion Mrs McBlain an article on The Teenager and Cocktail Mrs Marty reviewed some of the Book on Alcohol and Christian Responsibility Treasuer [sic] reported 32.25 on hand. White Ribbons were pinned on Three members namely Mrs Marty, Mrs Latham and Mrs Renfrow. Meeting closed by repeating the WCTU Benediction. Celia Whitely - Sec. Pro-tem
