399 W.C.T.U. met with Mrs. George German on April 18, Lela Adams presiding. After two songs, Winifred Sevenbergen led in devotions. She read Heb. 12:1,2, the theme being - "We Belong to a Great Company." She also commented on Heb. 11, and led in prayer After pledges to the flags, March minutes were read and approved Treasurer reported $24 balance having ordered Union Signal for director of legislative department. Marie Thompson has charge of the program. She talked about marihuana - its uses, names, results of use, what to do about it, etc. Eloise Keister read opinions of young people about sale of beer in stores, especially new idea of selling it not cooled. Lela Adams reviewed part of the book - "Fun or Folly." We learned that there are over 5,000,00 chronic alcoholics in our country, and this is increasing at the rate of 4 or 5 million per year. Most of this begins when teen-agers. Use of liquor at teen-age parties is common, Some become addicted in one month. One half of alcoholics live only to 51 years of age. Means of cure is only temporary in most cases Only 38% of people of U.S. are abstainers. One-third of drinkers are women. We enjoyed a letter from Mrs. Mikkel. Mrs. Warner and Mrs. Jackson were formally received into the Union. Dates and locations of the area conference were made known. Carol Sammons informed us of pending legislation and told us that the guards were drinking until 3:00 A.M. before the assassination of Pres. Kennedy. We were warned that we should look on food labels to know whether they contain alcohol. Meeting with fellowship circle, singing "Blessed be the Tie", and prayer by Eloise Keister. W.C.T.U. met with Agnes Sage on May 16, 14 present, Rachel Mikkel presiding. After pledges, and a song, Eloise Keister led in devotions with the theme - "Concerning our Family Heritage," stressing the 5th commandment and respect for parents. Rachel Mikkel read from the Union Signal - "What Mothers Know about Alcohol" - - "Alcohol and School Problems," an article - "Watch" and "Landmark." Minutes of April meeting were read and approved. Reported 38 cards sent, 41 calls made, and one legislative letter sent. Cards were signed to be sent to Mable Morgan and Mrs. Bailey. Treasurer reported $21.00 in treasury. Motion made and carried to send ten cents per member to the Ida B. Wise Smith fund for educational purposes, also other motions to send for leaflets to give our at Vacation Bible Schools, and to pay for 50 leaflets already distributed during National Youth Temperance Education week. Eloise Keister read an acknowledgement of having received the used spectacles at "Eyes for the Needy." Mrs. Allen paid dues for her mother, Olive Dunwoody, and gave another dollar to continue her rating of "One in a Million." Leaflets concerning this place were given out. Reports of the
