May 16 1916 W.C.T.U. met in the Baptist Church with 18 present Mrs. Brande led us in the devotional exercises. After singing "I need Thee" she read Rom. 16 Ch. where Paul writes of his women helpers. After prayer for the cause of Woman Suffrage and the officers of the W.C.T.U. [Miss] Whittaker sang "Teach us to Pray" [Miss Ethel?] Dawkins accompanied her. Mrs. Sopher Mrs. Lincoln & [Miss?] Terrell were elected delegates to the last Dist. Con. to be held in Richland in May 20. [Miss?] Clark and Mrs. Greene appointed [illegible] [Miss?] Buck Supt of [S.T.I.?] then introduced John Talbot and Mary Dietrich, who read their essays on "Alcohol and the Human Body" Mrs. Stocks, Mrs. [McGwin?] and Mrs. Webster were appointed judges. John Talbott was given the first prize 3.00 and Mary a second prize of 2.00. [Miss?] B. presented the prizes with encouraging words. The Topic was Women as Voters and Citizens Mrs. [McGwin?] gave statistics telling of 216,000 women in Penn. working outside of Home. They need the ballot to secure justice as to wages and hours of labor. Mrs, Stocks read the following answer to [illegible] -see next page Voted to send flowers to [Miss?] Jennie Bailey. A new flag has been placed on [illegible] School after our protest against the old one. Helped in maintaining Suffrage Headquarters June 5. No meeting in June as it rained.
