river about hectre miles above Dubuque and on my return the boat struck on the rocks in the upper rapids and was delayed five days before I could get another boat, I staid during that time at Stevenson near Rock Island on which is Fort Armstrong. The Country was about 50 miles above Rock Island & thirty miles below is the handsomest I ever saw the ...........in most places gently rising from the waters edge, the prairie with small groves of timber are constantly in sight & sometimes a high rocky bluff to vary the (illegible) with the exception of going to St Louis and up the river I have been constantly at home engaged in business of one kind or other - I live in the Hotel in town with my brother in law Wm Knapp who was recently married, he is quite a young man and it was necessary that I should have an eye over affairs - of course it costs me nothing for rent or board as the property belongs to the estate & the Hotel is now conducted by Knapp & myself for the purpose of paying off the debts of the estate - I have nothing to do more than to see that all goes right and at a time when it would cost me - I think Elizabeth will have something when $2000 from her father's estate when it is all settled up and perhaps more - but it will take some time - I am somewhat in debt and have been obliged to be but my credit is good as any one in the country & I most wish it to continue so. I owe about $900 and if that was paid should think myself worth $6000 at least - how to raise this money at present I do not know as it is a (moral?) impropabilty to borrow at any (?) - the whole country comes in
