Sandt & Hanford of Albany took out an attachment against their property, Betts returned, and they found they could not go on with their attachment & voluntarily relinquished any proceedings under it, but as Betts & Hanford were unable to pay what they owed by $8000, they made an assignment to Van Sandt & Hanford of their book accounts and also of what goods they had in their store & other loose property They also assigned over to Wagener notes to the amount of $1800 to secure him. Hanford of Albany was here about ten days endeavoring to arrange their business and secure himself, & previous to his going home left with me their book accounts to collect & about nine or ten small notes against different persons to the amount of $200. the amount due on the books & collectable will probable amount to $1200, the collecting these amounts will be worth something to me & gives me an introductions to business In your last letter you wrote that you would advance Mr Gould $50 towards the purchase of my books in the spring. If I could by my profession more than support myself the first year I should feel unwilling to have you assist me with any thing more at present and all I want is to keep by me a small sum to provide for contingencees, as in case of my being sick, I should not like to be totally unprovided. I shall write again shortly I would not wish you to pay any thing to Mr Gould If I can get along otherwise, as I feel as if you had assisted me more than I ought to have expected
