Massachusetts New Bedford June 8th 1833 Dear Father, Once more I am settled in business, I formed a connection with the house of Plumb Crandall & Co in New York, and came on here in April. Since then we have been doing a very good business - and all for cash, --- I would rather have settled in some part of New York if I could have found the place where I thought a good business could be done,- this is a monied place is about all I can say in its favour, the inhabitants have gained most of their wealth by Fishing - the Whale fishing is carried on verry extensively and has been the means of making many of those employed immensely rich,- they understand their business well, but farther than that their information is limited; owing in a great measure to their occupation, - there are exceptions but as a whole community they are behind many other parts of the State. - This place labours under the disadvantage of having a verry rough barren County round it, consequently the meat & vegetable market is verry poor, and what there is is high;----- Christina is with me,- we commenced keeping house about a fortnight since, and find it much pleasanter than boarding. The expense will be about the same - and it will be more here than it would in Kinderhook,- and if I cannot do a much better
