Island Grove Sangamon Co Illinois Dec 29th 1845 Dear Father This being my thirty ninth birthday I think it proper to appropriate a part of it in writing to my Father. Brother Harry & his wife were here on a visit in October and informed me of the death of Rufus & Elisa - the death of two so near & dear to you, must have been a severe affliction, and at this distance I can sympathise with you, knowing that the stroke must have been a severe one to yourself & cousin Ron & Mr. [illegible] - but if they were prepared for the important change, what was your loss, was their gain, and may it not be that it is intended by an all wise Providence as a warning to us "be ye also ready"--I have felt for some months that we were placed in very critical circumstances, it has been so sickly around us, but we have escaped with but little-- Augusta & Frank had the chills & fever a few weeks & Christina was sick one week. My health never was better
