I do not wish you even to mention the subject to Father at all for I would not give him an unnecessary pang, or help cast a cloud over the last years of his life. I hardly know how to mention another subject to you but must - You have already done all that a brother ought to do for another & more than ninety nine in a thousand would have done - You have helped me in my darkest hour & have had no return for it - Would you be willing to help me farther? - I should like to go there comfortably & expeditiously, the journey from New York can be done in 36 days - I should like a few Law Books and want something to help myself with when there - I am willing to sign any paper you will draw up, to relinquish any thing I may have in expectancy - & I further give you the assurances of a brother that your confidence of success ever crowns my efforts shall not be misplaced - Can you secure yourself so that ultimately you will not be the loser if I never come back? To what amount if you can would you be willing to help me? The truth is I want all I can get for I may be the Lawyer I may be an office holder or I may be the merchant and if worse comes to worse I may be
