Amos Smith & Lansing Becker was drafted in June had to pay [$]300 Each. no mony Saves them now John Allis is in the Draft. John Merrell is buying as usual. D Scofield and Fred Holmes have gon to Redwood to Sell goods Hamiltens Child Has moved in the villige and has contracted for Some 200 acr flax Last Spring and is now putting machinery in the John Cooper Building the dry weather has given a peas crop [illeg] [Short?] but good [illeg] and well Seeded. I think owing to good prices he will make mony if he had had a good crop he would have mad Several thousand Dollars [illeg] is [illeg] at it he Lives in one half of the H. Ainswerth House. I [accattunly?] See your [friend?] [illeg] at Carthage James Powel is drafted in Champions with 8 more as that [illeg] to day they know weather they can pay [$]300 or not and if they pay 300 now and get free this time. they will [illeg] their chance in Sept. Well Henry I want you Should write me on receipt of this and Let me know what your crops are this year and what those cowes are doing how much you made per cow Last year I Cannot Learn from your people anything about your Dairy buisness they think as I told you that you could not make money where you are by milking Cows give us your prices of cheese & Butter and what you are doing also what Thomas [is] doing and how your father in Law is making it and if you have to work as hard as here and if as well. C Acket went west this Summer intending to purchase but he found that people worked harder than than here and he came back. now I supposed that you could Live Easier their than here Is Climene well now it has been a long time Since you & [Rats?] wrote me that Letter and I have not done you Justice by not answering it. you gave Such grave accounts of your county and people that I Supposed you would (upside down above the first line:) N [illeg] moved on his farm Last Spring and is farming he bought James Seamen out. Capt. Burkes has been in [illeg] selling Horses all Summer he bought Last fall and had [illeg] time is due Some 90 Horeses on hand and goverment stoped buying and left them on his hands he had [illeg]. this is quite a Loss as he had to Kep them to Long he can Stand it James Sterling & Henry are getting rich making [Jin?]
