9 By beauty we do not mean mere prettiness. Some of the insidious effects of the popular taste for prettiness has been reflected in the work of some contemporary artists. The artist must live. He cannot sell his products of merit so consequently he is forced to cheapen his art and paint that for which there is a demand. Of course the dealer and the patron deem themselves the critics to pass final judgment and analysis upon the merits of an art production. I suppose that Max Parrish the contemporary artist who is best known in America. He is intensely popular with the public. But why? Surely not for the genius nor the artistry of his paintings. His works are decorative and colorful, but superficial and cheap and contain about as much art value as a tinted photograph. It would seem that the Maxfield Parrish
