2 Know not how I am to make a suitable reply to the committee who are to formally notify me of their most generous act of benevolence. It is the most embarrassing situation that I have ever been placed in my 83 years of existance. I would not know where to look for another shelter for my family if compelled to leave this even to rent, nor do I know how to raise the money to pay the rent if lift to that alternative. I am therefor under such a debt of gratitude as is actually overwhelming. I am told that I should recollect that such great & good men as Daniel Webster, Henry Clay, JJ Crittenden, S.A. Douglas were the recipients of similar contributions on the part of their friends for years before they died & that I should not feel as humiliated as I now do & have done for a long time. They say that I should recollect that Gen. Grant had splendid residences given him at Galena in Washington City, Philadelphia N. Fork I believe also at Long Branch. That Gen. Logan's
