friends had to contribute to redeem his homestead from the thousands of dollars which hung over it before his decease. That I should remember that Mrs Lincoln, Mrs Garfield Mrs Grant Mrs Logan & other widows are pensioned by thousands of dollars for life which but a few hundred are now contributed for the relief of my dear old wife & myself in our octogenarian days. I know that you, my most generous & never failing benefactor will be glad to hear of the timely provision for us & therefore do I inform you of it. I see that imigration is again coming into New York & from Europe & am thereby encouraged to hope that some one of my friends who are interested for me maybe able to find purchasers for my farms so as to enable me to pay off my debts. I thank you for your letter of the 28th Ult, now before me relative to our dear friend Mr Washburn to whom please make my regards & our love for each member of your family & for yourself.
