a devoted and stnch catholic was an advocate for the Mexican War and wanted his sons to go to it. I have myself often in stump speeches, said that if ever civil war should occur between the North and the South that I and my three boys w'd be found in the ranks of the Southern Army. and that, altho' we might be few in number we would be victorious as our cause w'd be just. Save for me, Mr Q's commn. Read the enclosed w'h I wish to send to Douglas the Traitor, & will, unless you and friend Clay strongly object to it, as tending to injure our party. I'll be with you on next Monday. Ever, You friend Geo. W. Jones (Newspaper clippings) George W. Jones, formerly United States Senator from Iowa, has been forced by poverty to seek a nomination for Sheriff of Dubuque County. He is 80 years old. Aug 26, 1879 The venerable George W. Jones of Dubuque, Iowa, ex-United States senator, now about 90 years of age, has struck financial luck at last after a long life of comparative poverty. It is in the form of a quarter interest in a lead mine which is turning out 30,000 pounds of ore a day.
