other honest man with Mr. Buchanan, I can assure you that I never would have had the temerity to recommend any man for office to the President or his Cabinet or to advise with those functionaries as to the best policy to be pursued with respect to the Public Lands, our Indians, or other relations in this State. Douglass on two occassions before I left Washington hinted to me, though he would not give me particulars or names, that I had been marked for the vengeance of the Administration. Hence I took the precaution just before leaving Washington to call on the President & the Members of his Cabinet to ascertain whether there was any grounds for such suspicions of or feelings towards myself. My interviews satisfied me that Douglass was Entirely mistaken and hence it was that I freely made known my views on the subjects referred to Entertaining as I did the most Exalted respect and the most sincere personal & political regard for the President and every single member of
