his cabinet. I shall for the future act more discreetly and will refrain from giving advice unless asked for it. It is surprising to me in the extreme that such a man as Bright could exercise influence over as pure patriots and enlightened men as now have the affairs of this nation under their control -- all of them having been personal acquaintances of his. It cannot but have been well known to Govrs. Cass, Toucey, & Cobb who served with him in Congress that he was never known as the friend of Mr Buchanan for the nomination -- his first choice being Jesse D. Bright of Indiana - his second, Hunter of Va - his third, Douglass of Illinois and all the time Earnestly hoping for such a dissension between the three latter and their friends at Cincinnati as would result in laying them all aside in order that his first love might be resorted to and taken up as the compromise candidate for the Presidency. Can it be possible that the President has forgotten the course of Gov Bright in Congress
