December 9 1928 Dear John, Freida and Family, We got into Singapore early this morning, but it was noon before we had our passports inspected, passed through quarantine and transferred from the boat to the hotel. The Am. Express man was waiting with your good letter - also one from Van's folks. Your letter was written Oct. 24 and has been here for two weeks. Begins to make us realize just how far we are from home. It really doesn't seem possible that we are here - things become more unreal the farther we go. We were five days coming from Manila - usually the trip is seven days. As it happened we were on a fast cargo boat (oil burner) which made one stop at Miri, Borneo. There the boat stowed away 1460 tons of oil to make the trip to Hamburg and back to Miri. Singapore is extremely tropical and hot. We are forced to take a siesta every afternoon in the tropics - its too hot to be out of doors. And really after lunch, or tiffin as it is called in the orient, I am absolutely worn out. The evenings and morning are pleasant and the nights not so bad. Our boat here was two days late so we missed our connection to Java. The first boat out now to Java is upon Wednesday and will put us almost a week behind schedule. We were
