disgusting. I don't know why it is so, but most of the white people living anywhere in the orient seem terribly dissipated. There are so many worthwhile things in life - and why they don't make the most of their time is a constant puzzle to me. Didn't get this sent yesterday when we stopped at Penang. Do you have your map? Penang is on the coast on the way from Singapore to Calcutta. We stop Tuesday in Rangoon (Jan 1) and if we get there in time we can take the mail boat out - otherwise we shall have to wait until the 3d. This boat is not up to much - the British India line which is sometimes called the bugs and insect line. The food is rather poor and unclean (lots of hair and bugs mixed in). I try not to think too much about it and gulp it down as best I can. I have a little reserve now but poor Van is on the ragged edge all the time. He doesn't seem to be very well. I can't make out whether it's being away from home and the responsibility of making good on the fellowship, whether its due to not being able to adjust himself to the sea, or whether it is something else. He really hasn't been himself the whole trip but I hope he will be alright when we reach Europe - not so frightfully long anymore. Hope you all had a fine Christmas and write! Love and kisses Van and Eve
