by Vesuvious several times but each time after a period of oblivion it has been excavated. The first few times it was rebuilt and repeopled but now it remains only a city of ruins. Pompeii is quite like any other ruined city and even resembles the deserted cities of India which we visited, except that those of tINdia were more colorful. Pompeii old walls and ruins are a dead grey; Indias ruins are warm reds and pinks or even a mellow yellow. Each block or square from street to street was a complete solid mass of shops or houses. The homes were built around a court or garden and of course the walls between homes were the only separation. Little narrow streets were paved with grey stones and on these, chariots wheels have left a groove in many places. From above the appearance of Pompeii is just a mass of walled small squares or rectangles - grey ruins. Some of the paintings on the walls which have been perserved throughout the ages are very interesting. The color is also lovely. Most of the wall decoration consists of garlands, cupids animals, and so on, but so far as I can discover there is no religious significances. The museum contains interesting
