2. crossing a street from a pedestrians viewpoint the taxis are even worse. There are few traffic regulations except to hurry up automobiles and that had its effect. Paris is very expensive in comparison with the rest of Europe, but of course not so much as in comparison with the orient. We are at a larger hotel than usual but we don't like it here very much. It is old and uncomfortable. We have a "suite" of rooms (3 tiny ones) under the rafters and from our attic windows the outlook is rather gloomy, although we pay right around $4.00 a day for our room alone. I may see what else I can find but I doubt whether I can do much better. We do like favorable surroundings for work and there is no inspiration to be had in our apartment. Well so much for our trouble and now to our other activies pro and con. But first of all let me tell you of some happy news. During our absence from the University, Van was promoted to a full Professorship with a substantial raise in salary. We just got the news yesterday and of course are very much pleased. It was so unexpected too because this isn't the usual policy of preceeding in the case of a leave of absence. We were also much saddened yesterday by the news of the death of our very good friend Dean Hellems almost a month
