Bloomfield Iowa April 22nd 1858. Dear Clara:- Your letter of the 21st inst came duly to hand. It gives me great peace of mind to know that you repose implicit confidence in me in every respect. My highest aim in life shall be, to try and not betray it; to indeavor to prove myself worthy of your affections, and to make you truly happy. May the author of my affections assist me to perform the pleasant task. Bishop Leo, of the Episcopal Church preached in our church last evening, much to my edification. The Bishop is huge in stature, gigantic in intellect, and withall, - a polished speaker. I have been to the neighborhood of Troy and back to day. I found the whole face of the country (This is to be taken with a few grains of allowence) coverd with plum blossoms; they cause the air to smell sweet
