Bloomfield Iowa April 27th 1858. Dear Clara:- Your letter came to hand in due time, and was gladly received. But I was sorry to infer from it that you had had the blues on last sabbath. You must not allow a few gloomy days to destroy the felicity of your disposition. When you feel inclined to the blues, make an extra exertion to be cheerful, and thus you may readily put to flight that greatest enemy to happiness, ennui. I guess I will not let you know what time in May, I shall be down, for I want to come in upon you when you are not looking for me. But you need not be "afraid" of my "shooting" you. Now Clara, "afraid I "would shoot" you!!!! Well I guess you only thought you ought to be shot; or how was that, any way? I guess you dreamt
