The trip to Mont Vesuvious is one of the most spectacular events of our whole trip. The ordinary train goes to a junction at the beginning of the upward grade (lava beds at the foot of the cone proper) where a machine is added to help transport the one car up the incline. After much grinding and labor the car reaches the top stops and passengers change to the funicular which begins at the foot of the cone proper but already a great distance above the sea. The funicular is a combination rail and cable affair built with the seats at a 35° angle to the 55° incline over which it passes. It passes in a straight line from the cone bottom to within a short distance from the top. From here a wide path to the top has been constructed. The mountain when viewed at close range looks like an enormous pile of soil dumped
