4 - The Pagoda slowly advances. The two giant [Leogryphyes?] that guard the entrance disengage themselves from their background, take on form, then come forward to meet us. There is no sign of welcome in their ugly stone faces but we two eagerly look forward to approaching events to take much notice of their disheartening features. The [Shundagon?] Pagoda, the most sacred Buddhist Temple in Asia was erected in 588 BC. on a site some little distance from Rangoon. This site at that time had already been sacred for many years. This sanctity of its site as ascribed to the fact that certain Buddhist treasures and relics are accredited with having been guarded there all these years. The Pagoda stands on an elevated terrace and is approached by a long, broad flight of steps. The two Leogryphys on either side of the marbles steps of the first flight distinguish the entrance.
