-8- The baked steps sear the soles of our feet. Heat and light rays reflect from the white-polished marble surface and beat upon our eyes and dizzy our brains. At the top of the marble flight of steps, however, begins an oasis of shade. The carved teakwood roof extends from here and forms and arcade over the dreary march of stone-steps which unfold by the hundreds before our eyes as they ascend to the Pagoda above. The grateful shade is cooling to our bodies but the stones, worn by countless millions of silent-feet that pour over them are a sorry spectacle, indeed! The low places are damp and slimy with filth; the lighter projections are powdered by an accumulation of generations centuries. Where as one does not hesitate to walk over the sun-baked surfaces outside, this interior promenade is a more serious matter. Here the careful piloting of our steps began. We become cautious
