62 read, announcing a splendid victory by General Butler. After resting until 9.15 A.M. the bugle sounded and the march was continued until about four oclock, when we deployed in line of battle and manuvered around until near dark. Friday, June 17th 1864 Near Petersburg, Va. Late this afternoon our regiment became engaged - the fight being in an open field without any shelter, except that afforded by several ravines and a railroad cut the rebels were driven across the cut but we failed to in crossing. Our loss during the engagement was Killed Chas Beash Company A. Peter Fox " " Jacob Gertler " C
