83 Front of Petersburg, Va. Tuesday July 26th 1864 About eleven oclock last night we moved out of the Rifle Pits and encamped in a field about a half a mile from the front. Negro troops relieved us. During the day Camp was arranged in regular order and tents put up. Adjutant Thos. Foster and I occupy one tent, around which he had a detail of men plant trees to protect us from the hot sun. For sometime I noticed an eruption on my arm and right leg. To day I showed it to the Doctor and was told I have erysipelas, and received medicine for it.
