201 Petersburg, Va. Sunday, April 2nd 1865 Early yesterday morning, April 1st, we left our camp and Major Schwenk directed that I should go ahead and report at Brigade Head Quarters that he was ready for orders. The morning was clear and the stars shining brightly, these with flying rockets-shells from the Rebel's and our own batteries presented a beautiful sight. The roar of the cannonading was awful, making the ground tremble like heavy peals of thunder. My horse seemed to catch the spirit of what was going on, hence he went dashing along with his head and tail up, apparently watching every shell. Having reported at
