Camp 125th U.S. Colored Infty Louisville Ky May 14" 1865 Dear "Sam" and "Tillie" I received your letters a few days ago and have taken a seat by our company desk pen in hand to try and Scribble a few lines in reply "to let you know that I am well and doing well" and so on to the end of the String - You [see?] we have recruited our company of "Shadders" and are here in camp at Louisville I staid at Lebanon all the time we were recruiting - Capt. Green went down to Columbia & Lt Neville to Greensburg - it was only about two weeks from the time we got our orders until we had our company full - Capt Fidler mustered and clothed them for us - We came down to Louisville the 25th of April and went into camp in the Suburbs - have Seven companies organized and were all in camp together a few days - the eighth company is full and will be out here from Taylor Barracks some time tomorrow or next day - have nearly recruits enough to Capt Fidler's brother Col of the 6" Ky Cavalry was on the boat "Sultana" when it was blown up. he was occupying a berth just over the boilers. Captain has been down there - all he could find out is, his brother is among the "Missing" Well how are the little "Sheeps" getting along? if it is as warm up there to day as it is here it will not be necessary to give them a warm bath. I have coat, vest and shoes off and am still most roasted. Have a nice bunk fixed up on one side of the tent so I can lie down when ever I get tired, I am lazy but I dont take a nap every day like you do. When we first came down here I had five big muster and descriptive rolls of our company to make out - Since that I have been straightening up the company books and papers and have had some Regimental returns to make out - Time passes much more pleasantly to me when I am busy than when I have nothing to do and am laying around (dident get that "laying around" in at the right place) Some of the "Sanitary Agents" were out to our Camp last Friday - had all the companies fall in and form a hollow Square around them while they talked to the "Sojers"
