fill the ninth company - the colonel received a Special order from the War Department to go on recruiting until he got the regiment full, he started four companies out on a recruiting expedition. Friday - Companies D. E. F. and G - I have the honor to be a representative of the last named company - but am detached from it now and am actg Adjutant - You ought to see me mounting the guard in the morning come out without Sword Sash or belt, and the same on Dress Parade - I havent got my commission yet - dont intend to go to much expense until I get that and get mustered Our musterin will be dated back though to the day our company was reported full - that was the 22nd of April - The colonel told me aday or two ago - that he heard Genl Brisbin had our appointments and was on his way to Louisville from Washington - If they would muster me out and let me come home I wouldent care whether my appointment ever came - Still I like being an Officer in a colored regiment very well, would much rather be here than with old Co "B" We have a splendid company (Vertically, from bottom left:-) They seemed to be well pleased with the reception they met with here - Said they would come back again this evening and talk to the men awhile + they have been sending out barrels of potatoes, pickles and dried apples, for us to eat - they are distributed equally among the companies - You may be sure us "ossifers" come in for a share of all the good things too The Sanitary Commission has sent out Several reams of paper and envelopes for our men to write to their friends at home on, It is fun to write for them - they want so many funny things written - there is hardly one written but what they want to tell somebody "Howdy" I couldent understand what they meant by "howdy" at first - it is a short [way?] they have of saying "How do you do" + It is amusing to hear some of the lower class of white folks talking down here in this "Wooden Country" they make some curious abreviations - such as we'uns you'ns "Did You'ens come all the way down here on critter back to fight We'ens" &c" Well, I dident expect to have so much to say when I commenced
