and some of them are quite intelligent for the chance they have had - is about a dozen in the company that can read and five or six that can write a little they are all very anxious to learn - they learn to drill very fast - pay better attention and take more pride in it than white soldiers do - the men in Co "G" seem to be very well pleased with their officers and are always ready and willing to do anything for us - I dont know yet but dont expect I will stay in company "G" - the colonel told our Quartermaster he thought he would have to give me the Adjutantcy if I would consent to take it - I told him when he first detailed me that I dident know much about the duties of the Adjutant and I thought he could get some other Lt who knew more about it than I did and who would be anxious to get the position If he says so I will take the posish and do the best I can - wont take me long to post myself so I can bring every thing up in regular "applepie order" Adjutant gets ten dollars more per month than a 1st Lt and is allowed a horse and forage for him - It would be (Vertically, from bottom left:-) And am not sure that you can read this either they way it is scribbled up - if you cant I will get a furlough and come up and read it for you, Enclosed is a whole bushel of love for yourself and Uncle Sammy+ You dident give me your Address but I will send this to Winfield, Write as soon as convenient From Your Nephew T J Hoge (Upside-down, at head of page:-) Direct to - Lt T.J.
