the time we recd the news.. we were on our way to him I had to ride in an Ambulance, and I thought it would kill me. rode all night, had a heavy guard with us the Lieutt. & Capt Everett.... as good luck would have it. Fitch came down just as we were starting and I prevailed on him to go with me in the Ambulance his orderly rode his horse. I tell you. his presence kept up my spirits. about 8 o'cl- next morning we arrived at the old hut where Will was. oh. how glad he was to see me.. The Surgeon dressed his wound, had a stretcher made to carry him to camp on. & in a short time we were on our way back... there were six bushwhackers hid on a high hill waiting for Will, and as he rode along, never thinking of. danger. he was fired upon three shots went into. his horse. & one entered his left shoulder passing down through his lung.. when first shot the blood flew out of his mouth. & the surgeon thinks the ball must have touched one of his lungs.. the ball is still in him. and the Surgeon thinks it best not to hunt for it, as Will is doing so well,. he can walk about some, has a good appetite. and with care will soon be able for duty, but not saddle duty he will probably go to "Co I". as soon as able for duty
