Louisville June 18th 1865 Dear Aunt Your very welcome letter was received a few days ago and I have taken the old pen in hand to scribble a few lines in reply "to let you know that I am well and doing well and hoping these few lines may find you enjoying the same great blessing &c" I still have the pleasure of being called a "Negro officer" and am occupying the tent call Hd-Quarters but have a faint idea that I will not stay in these "Diggins" a great while longer - An order came last evening from Adjt Genls Office to Col Armstrong saying that all Officers who have been mustered in Colored Regts here in Ky would have to go before a Board of Examiners and be reaxamined if they want to stay in the Service if they can fill the bill, all right, if not they will be mustered out - All those who have not been mustered in as commissioned Officers are to join their old commands without (Vertically, at head of page:-) My old "chum" Albert Hill is with Co "B" up in Iowa, I received a letter from E.M.Hewins two weeks ago - he and Mrs H wished to be kindly remembered to you - sent me the Card of an Ohio lady for me to correspond with, her name is "Eva Hewins" dident say whether she is a relative of his or not, Dont know whether I can ever find time to write to her or not, Well guess I will have to say goodbye & retire, to sleep, to dream perhaps &c -- Tell Uncle Sam "Howdy" for me. Write Soon From your Little Nephew T J Hoge 1st Lt 125th U S Negro Regt
