July 4 1865 Dear sister tille This is selebrsion day it wil be cept with renued intrest nodoub all over the land and well may the pepel rejoice on the acount of piece, and the reunion, of families but amidts all there rejoising may they not for get the thousnd of brave men hoa lost there lives to bring this aboute there bons now laying on the battel field many of them with not anuf of mother erth to cuver them,. On saterday envning Steve braught a letter directed to George A Wise in my care, then of corse the next was to now what was in it thought it must be from Lide so we opend it and soon found out that he was comeing, so I lookt for him all day asunday but now George but monday mornind as I was dodging round the milk house fixing up the work. that be longs to milking I sene a man comeing with his carpet sack I new it was George the minit I saw him and holoed at him I ges he thought I wouldent now him, as he said he intended to ask me wether I didant want a good harvest hand, but I dident give him the chance to speak first he is well and looking well, has gon to town with the rest of them to day I am alone as all ar gohn but the cats and dog George [Vertically, from bottom left:-] you musent get scared at this piece of papeer for reley its all I have if I dont use it cant right to day rely, tille its so warm it moste rests me to bake wouldent it be a good thing for a lazy body like me if the sun would bake the bred yes and make it to Oh the flies is going to take my hed of I yes they Make me think of old Johney Muckel I sene him in town once his pants was to short hadent aney socks on the flise weould bight his legs he would woul stand on one foot and rub them off with the other one no wonder if they bit as bad as they do to day now you wil think that is sharp for your best and best looking sister to tel how that Old man stampt at the files I think he aught to have astump on him I shouldent wonder if the babays had a govement stamp on them after this when they come for every thing us has why not them too [Continued upside-down, at bottom of page:-] you had beter not let Sam see what I said about the stamps and babeys it might scare him and make him blush. then he might have a bad apinion of me.
