8 Mrs John N. Calhoun 216 1/2 Jefferson Street Burlington Iowa Capt. John N.Calhoun APO 8963 New York, N.Y. Aug. 7 1943 Dearest Dorothea, Still sailing. I don't feel so good today kinda boggy and have a headache. So laid on my bunk most all day. Of course, that's what I do most of the time anyhow. We crossed the equator today and they has a small ceremony about it. Old Neptune initiating us into the order of "Shellbacks" - whatever they are. And gave us a certificate to show we had crossed it. Well, today is Cliffie's seventh birthday, isn't it? I can remember the day he was born - just you and Mac Garner and myself there. I guess it was at Jefferson Count Hospital. He sure was a grey little lump. And he has certainly grown a lot since then. I was just looking as the snaps of them and they all look much skinnier in the snaps than I thought they were. I made a grand mistake and only left two suit of underwear out as I thought I could always wash one so I guess I'll be kinda dirty before we get there. Maybe I can wash one suit soon. The ship pitched quite a bit today had nothing as bad as the movies. I guess that is the biggest surprise of all to me cause Lake Michigan has more waves than we've seen so far. Give Cliff his Daddy (illegible) for me. Love & Kisses. Daddy
