Carro Sunday, June 5, 1864 In Camp at Cairo Ill. the 44th Regt. camped on the ground Some 40 rods from [illegible] without [illegible]. on guard duty with 7 others for Co. E. Put on at 8 o clock A.M. 1st Relief. Col. Henderson Preached at dark. went to Miss river and bathed. 1st time Monday 6 off guard duty 5 1/2 o'clock [illegible] Harmon and myself went to Cairo & Back by dinner had quite heavy rain and the [illegible] town [illegible] captain arrived here [illegible] from Davenport on drill 7 oclock [illegible] Tuesday 7 commenced letter to Pa. Colonel rec'd marching orders for Memphis. Finished Pa's letter and wrote letter to [illegible] sewed stripe on out-side of each trousers leg and on blouse sleeves [illegible] Co divided into five messes [illegible]
