Oct. 4th 1918 My Dearest Bess: I hope you will overlook my writing material but we have to get along with what we find. We have been changing around so that we have no home. Have been working here for the last few days taking care of wounded principally. The cough that I have developed on the trip still stays with me but I haven't seen a fire since I left Bowie last spring. I don't know why these people do not believe in heat but they certainly do not use it. I went down through the Catacombs the other day and
