August 16th 1869 Appanoos Co. Iowa My dear brother I this morning seat myself to drope you a few lines to let you know that we are all well as common at this time and we have had as good health since we have been here as we had when there, we received your kind letter of the 30 July on the 14th of August and was glad to hear from you all and that you was all well and doing well and we hope that these few lines may find you all in good health when they come to hand, I will try to tell you some thing about our country. I can say that the soil is good and productive when a good season and the frost dont come too soon and kill our corn last season was a verry good season for corn but was niped with the frost and last season was a good season for wheat and there was fine crops of wheat but this season has been so wet that the wheat is not half crops and some have not cut the wheat and there is great fields of wheat not cut and we have jest finished cutting wheat here on the 6th of August. I bound wheat for Mr Taylor and it was not worth cutting.
