Frid. 18, This was one of the worst days, which we had this winter; did not have more than 25 scholars present on this account. I find that the study of orthography is very much neglected by most of my pupils, they attach apparently very little importance to it, chiefly relying on their memory in committing the words, I tried to teach them by rules but they took so little interest in the system that I gave it up. Mr. Ady butchered 30 fat hogs. Sat. 19. Mr. Ady and three others each having a team took his hogs to town. I supposed to day Musatine received the best pork that was taken there this winter, it sold today for $6.00 per 100 lbs. Visited [Meprs?] Oberman and Campbell, engaged the latter to deliver an address to the school on the last day. I also paid my respects to Mrs. Goddard. Came home in good time, after a very pleasant visit in town. Sund. 20. Rose rather late this morning, although it is very agreeable this afternoon, yet I am going to stay in the house and spend my leisure moments in mental improvement. Received three letters and a paper by mail today. I did not spend the sabbath as profitably as I might have done, but I must devote some time to those who surround me in order to make myself agreeable to all.
