Wednes. 5 The soldiers were very angry, because they are so closely confined, we are not permited to the camp, which is guarded, by 70 men. Our company did guard duty today, and I stood guard near the prison tent. We had no difficulty save now and then we took a soldier who was [belated?] and tried to break through the guard. It is the first time I ever was a regular sentinel. Thurs. 6 On account of being on guard yesterday I am released from duty today. I spent this day partly in sleep and partly in writing a few letters, I received a few postage stamps from H. E. Schuster which were very acceptable. The Col. gave us permission to leave the grounds, while we are not on duty, but must be passed over the line by an officer. This received the approbation of all the soldiers. Frid. 7 A new arrangement is made in appointing the guard by which 7 men are taken every day out of each company, my name being one of the first on the roll, I had the pleasure of being on guard again for 24 hr which makes 48 hours out of 72 that I stood guard, I felt tired and sleepy by the time I got through. I did not do much of anything all day, save to march up and down the line and to challenge a few individuals now and then. The weather is very fine.
