Thurs. 22 For the last few weeks, I have not agreed very well with my lts, as they try to take the advantage over me whenever they can. They do not approve of the president’s emancipation proclamation, nor the policy of the administration, but are working to extend the spirit of dissatisfaction that is now brooding over our troops. They never joined the army because they desired to aid the government to suppress this rebellion, but for gain. Lt. C. Kranz has tendered his resignation for this reason. Various conflicting rumors from the Eastern and Western armies reached us. The probability is that we shall soon be paid.
