1863-02-27 -- 1863-02-28

Fri.  27.  I am on duty today, as “Officer of the day”, there is not much to do, although I made several changes in the guard, our men as a general thing are getting too careless in doing their duty and want stirring up.  Found Jacob Lang a sleep on his post about 10 ½ P. M. a short time afterwards Colonel Hill found Henry J. Martin asleep on the same post, he sent them to the guard house.  

Sat. 28  The above named men, of my company in company with Dietrich Sauer, were placed into the guard house (prison guard house) for four days, on bread and water, and thirty days of hard labor, this serves them right.  Our regiment had its regular muster today, the troops looked very well indeed especially my company which was publically commended by the Colonel on dress parade.  Thus it shall ever be while I am its Commander, Company “C” shall be a head.  I received a good many letters.  Mrs. J. H. Wallace spit upon the stars and stripes.
