Thurs. 23. Returned to my company this morning. Saw a great many of my friends in the different regiments, Soper, Free, Hanna, Douglass, Stibbs, Hale &co. I had a pleasant chat with them Our camping ground is not the best in the world yet it is tolerably good Had some altercation again with the Colonel who reprimanded me without any reason for it and I retaliated. Sat up very late last night studying and talking. The weather is very fine. Fri. 24. Received orders from our Colonel to get everything ready for a long march. In the evening took a walk to the canal and inspected the great dredging machine, which works beautifully in throwing the dirt out. It is supposed that if the water will not fall in three or four days the canal will be finished. I hope it will be a success so that we may be able to get in the rear of the rebels.
