May 1. 1863 May 1 Fri. 1 What a glorious day this is, yet how differently do we spend it now from what we used to do. The girls were accustomed to twine wreaths for us, the boys had their gay sports, students had picnics and old folks looked on the gay scenes with pleasure, but now how many hearth stones are desolate, and mourning prevails over our once happy land. We received orders to march early tomorrow morning, we will go to Richmond. We have received General Matthies as our brigade commander, he is a very fine man. Every man takes 60 cartridges and two days cooked rations. I suppose we will see some hard times but we know how to do our duty and we will do it.
