Saturday 9 This morning I rose from my hard bed feeling rather unwell, but after taking a cup of warm coffee I felt better. Remained in our camp till 2 P. M. I marched on with two wet shirts on my back which I had washed during the forenoon. The officers and men fared badly on account of having no baggage with them, and in not obtaining enough food to eat. The men were on 3/5 rations and the officers could scarcely obtain anything, they could neither steal, beg or buy it, but by numerous hooks and crooks they managed to keep the lamp of life burning within them. We did very good marching passed through a small town called Rocky Springs, this, as all other habitations which we passed, was almost deserted by the white people. Encamped near a little creek about dusk, made our beds and rested well. Sunday 11 Remained in Camp today, to the great joy of the men who complained a little for not having enough food to eat. Some rebel prisoners went by. I went on picket guard tonight, with my Company this side of the town. Troops passed along till dark
