Tuesday 16. It was quite cool today owing to the recent rain. I read nearly all day. One of my men Wm. Kaiser returned from Memphis, having been on furlough, he reports every thing all right at home. Wednesday 17. Various rumors about the besieged rebels circulate in Camp, it is said they are nearly starved they receive a small piece of “cornmeal-pea” bread and that they cannot hold out any longer than four days. I hope it is true. A number of deserters came into our lines, who told the same story, yet they cannot always be trusted. But I suppose the rebels are nearly played out I know they are closely hemmed in. They must come out or surrender soon Thursday 18 Our paymaster is here, ready to pay us till the 1st of May, some of the men are glad to get their pay, others growl, and do not want any until the end of this month so as to get four months pay at once. The army is a queer place, the men frequently desire a thing and when they get it they are dissatisfied It seems to me that soldiers must have something to growl at. Our Col. was placed under arrest, on acc. of charges of cowardice & incompetency, being preferred against him by Lt. Clark They will explode without damage
