Wednesday 30 Lt. Kern and I made the rounds again today, but saw nothing very remarkable. Preparations are being made for a grand social party on New Year’s eve, to be given by the provost marshal Capt Booth of the 9th Ill cav. and Captain Wells & Ryan of the 8th Iowa Inf. The news in this vicinity is not of any great importance. The rebels do not trouble us at present, though a rumor is in circulation that they are making a demonstration on Memphis. If they attack that city, it will be the last attack that the majority of them will ever undertake. We have sufficient troops there to hold their ground until they could be reinforced by troops along the R.R. who would attack the rebels in the rear and make a wholesale capture or slaughter of them. The reaction in favor of the union in some of the seceded states is truly astonishing and encouraging. The president’s proclamation of amnesty seems to work admirably. The rebels being pressed hard everywhere.
