Morristown Cass Co Mo Mr M. M Mark Camp Johnson Morristown Mo, Jan the 4th 1862 Well old friend here I find myself seated on the ground with my paper on my lap pretty cold and in good health and hope when these few lines comes to hand may find you and the rest of the family all well As it has been but a short time since i wrote home i thought i would put my time in writing letters being as this is my birth day today Sir i am free from your charge i go and come when i please transact all such business as comes in my way my own of course unless i see fit to put in an agent being as my business is very extensive and calculated to be a handful for a well educated and a graduate of some high school i take the responsibility upon myself being as i am highly respected and my companions has been men of high standing and have carried myself very high i think sir i can manage my affairs you must not think i am getting above my business but perhaps i am i think i could transact all such business as would come before a supervisor any how but hold on - here i am a private in the army have no business to transact but that
