June the 1ist 1862 Dear Sisters Brothers Father & Mother I take my pen in hand to let you know that we are all well at present and hope those pen lines may find you all the same I received your letters one yesterday and one some time ago now I will tell you the reason I have not answered them sooner well money is so scarce here that I could not get none to pay postage with untill this week I dont scarcely know what to write to you for there is not much news here only hard times I thought that I had seen hard times once but times at present beats anything that I ever seen our crops look tolerabe well now that we have had a very dry spring untill the last few weeks my corn is ready to plow and look prety well my wheat will be half crop I learned yesterday that the Union troops had lost two battles lately one in Va and the other on the Miss but they had fearful odd against them I hope to God that the Union boys will kill every last rebel son of a bitch thats a live in our land it makes me so mad to think that so many good men as we have has to go there and be killed I dont want to say any more on this subject now If I could get away from Sarah I would start this morning for the army but I cannot luave
