July the 14th 1861 Dear Father and Mother I take my pen in hand to let you know that we are well at present and hope those few lines may find you all in the same state of health I have not heard anything from home since June the 3rd and as I had not much to do to day I thought I would write you a few lines to let you know how things was a going on here. Well there is a good deal of excitement about the Indians they are a threatening us pretty hard I saw a man yesterday from off the blue and he said that he saw seven thousand well armed Indians marching in this way they have began their deprodations within seventy five miles of here they have robed some familys and kill some men but if they do come on here you may look for Iowa to be crowded with women and children in a short time for there are a number here that is ready to start now but I am not alarmed yet but if I see there is any danger I will sent Sarah back there and then I will fight the red skins untill the last we have a company here at falls city and our Captain is and old dragoon and he understands his business. The missourians have throwed up breast work within ten miles of here and they say that they will fight till
