The most of the women chews tobacoo nearly every little boy from the time he begins to walk has a chew in his mouth The young girls will set up and chew as big as anybody there has been several dances here since we came and all of the young ladies would gather in to dance and there was not one out of a dozen but what chewed tobacoo I think that is carrying the joke to far it is bad enough for a man to chew a pair of lips all stained with tobacoo juice would be a pretty thing to kiss wouldnt they I would as soon kiss trys posterior at once There as been some of our regiment married to some of just such women as I have described; since we come here may Pharos plague follow them in my wishes Such men and women is no account where ever they are they was the trash of the Regiment married the trash of the country I expect we have target shootings every day at 11 o'clock two hundred yards distant from the target the bulls eye has been knocked out and any amount of shots has been put inside of the ring this I think is a good insitution for us to practice shooting The troops here are as fallows the 8th and half of the 35th Iowa one battalion (which is four companies) of the 3rd Ills cavalry and the 6th Indiana Battery composes all the troops here half of the 35 is at Middleton 5 miles up the R.R., We have two large bridges to guard on is a mile above town the other is a mile below there is a fort at both of them and companies A and F guard them the 12 Iowa is at Chewalla nine miles east of here it with the above named troop comprises our Brigade the Second Brigade of our division is at La Grange 27 miles from here towards Memphis the first Brigade is at Germantown & Memphis & Lafayette so you see our Division is scattered out along the R.R. for ninety three miles and in six hours it can concentrate at any point between here and Memphis
